Steelville District breaks ground on middle school

By Ava Viehman

STEELVILLE–The first thing on the agenda at the August 2 meeting of the Steelville R-3 Board of Education was to hold a public hearing on the school district’s tax rate for 2007. No one was present for the hearing.

Later in the meeting a new tax rate was set in the amount of $3.7269, which is two and a half cents less than last year. The tax rate was based on the county’s assessed valuation for the district.

Supt. Harvey Richards gave a progress report on school construction. He said good progress was being made at the elementary school. Classes will be held in the old classrooms until construction is completed.

Work is beginning at the middle school site. A groundbreaking was held by the board after the tax levy hearing. The projected completion date is July 31, 2008.

Sharon England, Transportation Coordinator, gave the board a report that included the various bus routes. The routes and drivers will be the same as last year and will include Mill Spring Subdivision. All buses have been cleaned and look great.

No new buses will be purchased this year, but will probably be included in next year’s budget. There was a discussion about the condition of some of the gravel roads. Good roads are important for student safety and also good roads help with bus maintenance. Buses were driven 29,670 miles last year. Questions should be directed to England at 775-3155.

Richards gave a budget update and said the school auditors will be coming for the annual audit on August 27 and 28.

The building project reported expenditures of $130,219.38. Yearend budget numbers were approved.

There will be a meeting later to discuss the roof project at the high school, the budget, finances, curriculum and evaluations. MSBA policies are to be read and then voted on in September.

The propane tank at the town campus is being moved before school begins.

New staff members will be meeting for information and discussions this week. School starts Thursday, August 16.

Two resignations were accepted from George Sharp, a technician, and Susan Bunch, an aide.

The next meeting was set for Thursday, September 6 at 6 p.m. at the Early Childhood Center.
